Unleash the Power of the Mind!

 Creativity continues to be under-valued in our world. Yes a broad statement, but if you’re looking at making a living from your art, then you’re probably going to be in for a challenging time. 10CC’s famous lyrics ‘Art for art’s sake, money for god’s sake’, aptly sum up the difficulty of being creative and getting paid for it. As an artist and musician on-and-off for many years, I too have struggled with this dilemma: is my creativity – art – worth money? How do I measure the worth of my creativity? Why would someone want to pay for my art? What am I getting from doing this?

 Sting once said something that stayed with me…’making music is your best reward’. Something like that, which I took to mean that the music created is the reward itself. Well, I love creating, but I need to pay the bills, which is the dilemma…ergo the common saying upon musos: get a day job!

However, having said that, being creative does have other rewards beside the ’outcome’ or product itself…and no it’s not money…read on.

 “Are there still original ideas in the world?”
“They beat me to that bright idea; what else can I do?”
“I’ve failed many times before that I can’t think of anything else to solve this problem anymore.”

These statements reflect the thought of an individual who has given up on creativity. Sadly, a lot of people share this way of thinking. They never viewed creativity as a very useful tool to improve or improvise in life in all its diversity.

A situation that requires a solution can be approached in a variety of ways. There isn’t a single way fix to a problem. Being creative opens new horizons and can deliver many benefits. Creativity can sometimes be mistakenly interpreted as an obstinate attitude. Some people think that insisting on doing things in a different way is a sign of stubbornness.

Never hold back a good idea. Everyone is free to interpret his own unique way. Any interpretation by itself is creativity at work. A person who enjoys creative thinking can easily come up with innovative solutions for situations that require a quick fix.

For instance, your car got stalled on a deserted highway due to a leaky rubber hose on the cooling system. Tough luck! Of all places, it had to happen in the remotest places.

If you have some chewing gum in your pocket, it just might be a handy fix. Start chewing the gum and patch it on the leak. To keep the gum in place, tie it with a piece of rag. This quick fix might do the trick so you can drive several miles without an overheated engine, until you get to a service station to have the leaky hose replaced.

There used to be a television series entitled “MacGyver.” The main character is an extremely creative and crafty guy. Whenever he finds himself in a tight fix, he tries to find a way out of it with his quick fixes utilizing available materials around him.

In a way, creativity is a never-ending learning process. From learning, you gain untold benefits, which you can use in real life situations.

Being creative might require you to think out-of-the-box, venturing your mind into the uncommon. You can never be sure of your ideas until you try them. As long as there is no perceived danger involved, it is always worth a try.

Inventions are products of creative minds. The field of science, in whatever branch you may touch on, is invention itself. Without creative minds, science would have been a forlorn field of knowledge.

It must be noted that most adaptations to improve or improvise are aimed at improving current conditions. Upon analyzing honest applications of creativity, the ultimate intention is to achieve good for all and the will to build lasting peace. After all, this intention is what counts most.

Erich Fromm spelled it out clearly, “The conditions for creativity are: to be puzzled, to concentrate, to accept conflict and tension, to be born everyday, and to feel a sense of self.”

Mary blames the entire industry for why the Law of Attraction is not working for people. Mary states that ‘they take an amazing truth and they amplify the ’sexy’, less vital bits, and leave out the rest.’

Mary believes that the Law of Attraction that we’re getting today is actually the ‘watered down’ version of the real thing. Bob Proctor also believes that the Law of Attraction is incomplete and reveals the 11 ‘Forgotten Laws’ that will finally uncover the Law’s ‘true potential’.

I don’t know about you, but I’m getting a little tired hearing that word…’FINALLY’! I guess that I had been thinking that the Secret was finally an approach that would deliver. Now don’t get me wrong here, I’m truly grateful that I have learnt about this approach and I can honestly say that my life has improved in so many different ways. I’m clearer about what I want, my finances have improved to the point where I don’t have to worry about money anymore, my general health is better and more importantly, my state of mind is so much more positive than it had been before the Secret.

I have experienced some amazing ‘little’ miracles, but having said that, not all of my ‘attraction requests’ have yet manifested themselves, which makes me ask, ‘well why not?’ Then I think, well this is a doubt. I remind myself of my mantra; I have asked, I believe, I will receive…and then move on.

However, Bob Proctor is asking whether The Law of Attraction is just hype? He talks about the financial system wreckage like the major banks dropping like flies and that the ‘feds’ seem to be running around like ‘headless chickens’…whatever that means – I don’t mean the metaphor.

So apparently, what’s been left out are the 11 laws that weren’t covered in The Secret. Apparently we’ve been given half-truths, which is why we’re getting similar results. I must admit that I’m curious and I’m a bit of a sucker for ’secret’ information. I mean, I’ve had some good results so far, so perhaps it might be worth further investigation. Some argue that finding (and living) your passion will lead to all that you truly desire…including fabulous wealth. Others argue that you should go where the money is and develop your interest in that…this leads to what you desire.

The road that the Budda is said to have traveled is the middle path. This is a gross simplification, but in essence, is there a middle path that strikes a balance between pursuing your passion AND developing an interest in those ‘popular’ areas? Eg, I want to be a musician, but I don’t want to sell myself out to ‘pop’. I am an artist, but I don’t want to paint ‘pretty’ pictures that seem to popular with the masses.

This has been the central core struggle for me over the years…what I want to do, versus ‘paying the bills’. Findng your ‘niche’ in life is the theme here. What if you can’t find your purpose and/or your passion at all?

“I can’t seem to discover why I’m on the planet.”

“What is my purpose here? I know there’s something I’m supposed to be doing, but I don’t know how to find out what it is.”

“I don’t seem to be passionate about anything.”

I’ve heard these complaints over and over from my clients.

Discovering our passion and purpose is vital to our joy and well-being. The problem is that many people have lost touch with any sense of their passion and purpose and have no idea how to access this information.

The blueprint for this information lies within our core Self, our essence, the true Self that is often buried during our early years. If our true Self was not seen and validated by our parents, teachers, or other caregivers, it is likely to have gone underground. The self many of know as our “self” is generally our wounded self, our ego, the self we created to get love and avoid pain. Our wounded self has within it all of our fears and false beliefs, and does not have access to what is true for us.

How, then, do we discover our passion and purpose if the blueprint for this information is long buried? The good news is that while it is buried, it is not lost. Anyone can reclaim this information if you are willing to do the inner work of healing your wounded self.

In our society, we tend to ignore our special talents and choose our careers according to what will give us a sense of security. Too often, however, what makes us feel safe does not fulfill us spiritually. For example, Roger worked for many years as an attorney, but he never enjoyed it. He made lots of money, yet when he consulted with me he was suffering from anxiety and depression. He had become an attorney because his father had been an attorney and wanted Roger to follow in his footsteps. Roger had gone along with what his father wanted for him because he didn’t know what else he wanted and now, in midlife, he was miserable. He yearned to discover his passion.

A few months after starting to work on his sel, Roger remembered that he had really wanted to be a teacher. He had never seriously considered teaching because he felt he couldn’t make enough money, but now he was willing to make far less money because he was so unhappy with his present work. Roger went back to school and got his teaching credential and is now a high school social studies teacher. The last time I spoke with him he was radiant! He loved working with adolescents, and he felt he was making a real contribution to their lives. For the first time ever, he felt alive and passionate about his life. His wife decided to take up some of the financial slack by doing something she had always wanted to do: design children’s clothing. She started her own mail-order business and is thrilled with it. Their marriage and family life is flourishing because both of them are happy and fulfilled within themselves.

Ricki came to see me because she was so unhappy working as a controller of a big import business. Yet she had no idea what else she wanted to do. It took about a year of practicing Inner Bonding before her true Self told her that she wanted to be a nutritionist. Ricki hadn’t wanted to hear her true Self because she didn’t want to go back to school. Finally she was so unhappy that she decided to listen. She is now back in school enjoying discovering her passion.

While it may not always be possible to change your work immediately to something you love, if you follow your passion, it will often lead you there. And even when you have to earn money in ways that do not express your soul, you can seek volunteer opportunities and hobbies to express who you are. Often these can lead to the work that you will eventually do.

Alfredo worked as a manager of a large supermarket. With his small savings, he decided tostart pursuing a hobby that had always fascinated him – restoring old cars. He used all his extra money to buy his first old car and spent many blissful hours restoring it. He was so good at it, he was able to sell his restored cars for a lot of money. Eventually he was able to quit his job at the market and pursue his passion full time. Ultimately he started a project in a prison teaching inmates to restore cars. Alfredo now loves what he does and receives great satisfaction from helping others.

Your soul has a deep desire for you to express yourself in ways that brings you joy. It is your job to discover what that is and to bring it about.

The Secret - Planet Earth

I‘ve been daily using The Secret’s ideas, techniques and approaches to health and wealth for the past 4 months. I’ve always been interested in personal development as I know my outlook on life closely reflects and shapes my health and wealth.

I can honestly report that my health is better and so is my wealth, since putting The Secret into practice. Mind you, I’m nowhere near the millionaire status that many aspire to when they consider themselves to be getting close to being ‘rich’, but I am wealthier now than before I started my daily – and nightly – wealth and health meditations…and my health is better too.

 As I put into place new ways of thinking about my health, wealth, careers, wants etc, my awareness about my undermining and negative thoughts grew. Now I considered my self-awareness to be pretty good – well once it was – but like anything, it needs to worked at and ‘renewed’ regularly. It’s not like ‘pure’ awareness can be held all the time…as least not for me anyway. On a day-to-day basis, we interact with ideas, information, emotions and our own conditioning and it’s easy to get lost in all this as time goes on. It becomes easy to buy into what I like to call the ‘crap’ of life. Suddenly, I became very aware of my ‘crap’, and realised how much it was ‘blocking’ me and closing me down in a number of ways.

Now, when I have doubts about something, I have an instant ‘rebuttal’, which I say a couple of times…eg, I can’t afford that – I can afford it; I’m getting old – I’m growing younger. It’s simple I knoe,  but the real challenge here is believing this to be true in the face of current circumstances. Think of the many things achieved despite evidence to the contrary. It may take some time to counteract years of negative thinking and the effects upon your life, but the essential core to The Secret’s teaching is for me this: it’s how you feel as you think these ‘rebuttal’ thoughts. If it increases you energy, spirit, well-being – even just a little bit – then it’s got to make you feel healthier, and if you’re healthier, then you’re going to achieve more.

Another main practice is getting clear within yourself about just what you want…asking for what you want, expecting it, believing it will happen – despite evidence to the contrary – and receiving it. I have practiced this daily and really believe that I’m now clear with what I want, and observe myself working on what I want with renewed clarity and spirit…for me, that’s powerful stuff.

My intention with this post is not to provide a testimonial for The Secret. Whilst I do recommend it, I am really interested in hearing about other people’s experience with the concepts and how it has been working for them…good or not. The Secret: 1st 20 minutes

PS.  The author of The Secret Behind the Secret, Dr Eric Amidi, talks about the problem with most manifestation guides is that they teach you all of the concepts, but none of the ‘meat’. What he means by this is that he has found that a lot of manifestation teachers don’t know how to apply what they are talking about, because they don’t understand the scientific principles behind the Law of Attraction…of course, this leaves the reader lost and/or despondent when their ‘wants’ don’t get fulfilled quickly.

The Science of Getting Rich is a timeless classic written in 1910 by Wallace D. Wattles. It is a bold title for a book and suggests that getting rich is a predictable outcome if one can master the principles outlined in the book. Here is how Wallace D. Wattles puts it in his own words, “The ownership of money and property comes as a result of doing things in a certain way. Those who do things in this certain way, whether on purpose or accidentally, get rich. Those who do not do things in this certain way, no matter how hard they work or how able they are, remain poor. It is a natural law that like causes always produce like effects. Therefore, any man or woman who learns to do things in this certain way will infallibly get rich.”

Certainly, this book is well referenced by many of the great teachers today and it is the same book that inspired Rhonda Byrne to produce that runaway success “the Secret”. Here is what Rhonda Byrne said on her introductory note to the book, “I can honestly say that, since that first night when a tattered printed manuscript found its way to me (thanks to one of my daughters), my life has never been the same. Once you read it for yourself, you will understand why”. Rhonda went on to produce the movie “the Secret” and the best-selling book of the same title which has sold millions of copies worldwide.

However, learning how to do things in that “certain way” as described by Wallace D. Wattles may be more challenging for some as the book was written nearly 100 years ago. Some of the language is a little dated and much of its wisdom lost from a modern day perspective.
